Project Overview
In 2011, the Blue Water Young Professionals began preparations for the Black River Walk project. Along with community partners, the BWYP developed a vision and long-term plan to shape, enhance and breathe new life into the riverfront along the Black River. The Black River Walk project is broadly described as a public spaces plan for “creative placemaking” through the development of a ten block stretch of land along the Black River, redefining this space as a destination.
Phase I of the project wrapped up in 2014, with final installation of maritime-themed bike racks and benches completed in time for a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 27, 2014. It features six bike racks, six benches and 32 painted picnic tables.
Phase II of the Black River Walk Project is currently in the planning stages. In partnership with the City of Port Huron Recreation Department, the BWYP was awarded a $45,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport program, a $5,000 donation from the Community Foundation of St. Clair County, and an additional $10,000 from the City of Port Huron to continue work on the Black River Walk. Planned improvements include trail heads, gathering areas, and signage.
The BWYPs also worked with community partners to install a public pavilion with two fire pit seating areas and grilles for cookouts. This project was completed at the end of summer 2016, and is available for group reservations by contacting the River Street Marina.
Starting in 2017, the BWYPs partnered with the City of Port Huron and the SC4 Arts program to design two 56 foot murals in the 7th Street underpass tunnel, a clay tile entryway, and two interactive murals designed to adorn the exterior walls of the tunnel. This project is currently in the design phases, but will feature art designed by local students, and tiles created as a part of the SC4 Clay and a Concert series, a program for local 5th grade students. The tile entry is scheduled for completion by June 30, 2018.
